I’m Nick Salvatoriello—DJ Nick Sal—owner and lead DJ of Versatile Sound Productions.
I’ve been DJing private celebrations since 1998, from birthdays and anniversaries to reunions, graduations, retirement parties, college events and the occasional gathering that’s difficult to categorize beyond “we have a reason to celebrate.”
My approach is pretty simple:
Learn your people. Understand your taste. Read the room. Then build the party from there.
The Best Parties Sound Like the People in Them
Private parties are often some of my favorite events to DJ because the guest list can be wonderfully unpredictable.
Your parents.
Your college friends.
Your kids.
Your neighbors.
The cousins you haven’t seen in five years.
And the one uncle who has been patiently waiting since 7:15 to request “Sweet Caroline.”
Getting all those people to enjoy the same party doesn’t come from pressing play on a generic playlist.
Before your event, we’ll talk about the guest of honor, who’s coming, the music you love, anything you definitely don’t want, and what kind of atmosphere you’re trying to create.
Then I’ll use that direction—and nearly three decades of experience reading crowds—to figure out what the room needs next.
Sometimes that’s the newest song in the Top 40.
Sometimes it’s Stevie Wonder.
Sometimes it’s ABBA.
And sometimes three generations unexpectedly agree that Earth, Wind & Fire has solved the problem.

DJ + Professional Emcee When You Need It
Sometimes the DJ’s job is mostly music.
Sometimes somebody also needs to get everyone’s attention.
I also work professionally as an event emcee and facilitator, so I’m very comfortable helping with the moments between the songs.
That might include introducing the guest of honor, making announcements, coordinating a surprise entrance, introducing a toast, running trivia or a game, facilitating a giveaway or simply helping the evening move from one moment to another.
The key is knowing how much hosting the event actually needs.
I don’t believe every birthday party requires a man with a microphone shouting at people.
Sometimes the most professional thing an emcee can do is say what needs to be said…
and then put the microphone down.

Professional Doesn’t Have to Mean Complicated
One reason private parties usually cost less than weddings is that they often have fewer moving parts.
Maybe your event takes place in one room.
There’s one sound system.
A lighter timeline.
Fewer vendors.
And one main planning conversation instead of multiple detailed wedding-production meetings.
That’s great.
I don’t want to turn your 50th birthday into a NASA launch just to justify my existence.
VSP will scope the service around what your event actually requires.
If your celebration becomes more complex—multiple locations, formal introductions, extensive AV, several microphones, a detailed program, additional lighting or more production coordination—we’ll talk about that too.
You pay for the event you’re actually planning, not the category name attached to it.

Why Hire Nick Instead of Just Making a Playlist?
For some parties, you absolutely should make your own playlist.
Seriously.
If it’s a casual backyard gathering, you know the music, somebody has good speakers and nobody needs to manage much beyond keeping the cooler full, DIY may be exactly the right answer.
The value of hiring me shows up when you don’t want somebody at your party spending the night thinking about the music.
I’m watching who’s responding.
Taking requests.
Changing direction when something isn’t working.
Managing the sound.
Keeping an eye on timing.
Helping with announcements.
And figuring out whether the next song should keep the dance floor moving, bring another generation into it or give everybody thirty seconds to find another drink.
A playlist can play songs.
A DJ can respond to people.
And people are ultimately the party.

One of my favorite private-party reviews came from a client who hired me for her husband’s 60th surprise birthday.
She admitted afterward that she’d initially been skeptical about whether a younger DJ would understand an older crowd.
By the end of the night, we had worked our way through artists ranging from Paul Simon, ABBA and Creedence Clearwater Revival to newer music they hadn’t even heard before—and everyone was having enough fun that some of the activities they’d planned never actually happened.
I’ll take that as a win.
Music changes.

Private Party DJ FAQs
What kinds of private parties does VSP DJ?
VSP provides DJ and emcee services for milestone birthdays, anniversaries, surprise parties, graduations, retirements, family and class reunions, holiday parties, college and alumni events, engagement parties, backyard celebrations, block parties and plenty of events that don’t fit neatly into a category. If people are gathering to celebrate something and music can make the experience better, it’s probably worth asking.
How much does a private party DJ cost?
The scope matters more than the label. A straightforward four-hour party in one location with one sound system and a light timeline requires less preparation and equipment than an event involving several spaces, extensive lighting, formal programming, multiple microphones or additional production. I’ll ask a few questions about your event and recommend the appropriate level of service rather than automatically treating every private party like a wedding.

Why does a private party usually cost less than a wedding?
Private parties generally involve fewer moving parts: often one location, a simpler timeline, fewer vendors and a lighter planning process. Weddings frequently add ceremony sound, several event spaces, formal introductions, speeches, multiple planning meetings and many once-in-a-lifetime cues that increase preparation and responsibility. If your private event has that same level of complexity, we’ll scope it accordingly.
How much control do I have over the music?
Quite a lot. We’ll talk about the guest of honor, who’s attending, favorite artists and genres, must-play selections and anything you absolutely don’t want. I don’t need you to build every minute of the playlist, though. Part of the reason to hire a DJ is to give me enough context to understand your taste and then let me react to what your guests are actually enjoying.
Do you take requests from guests?
Yes, generally. Requests are useful because they help me understand the room and make guests feel involved. I still filter them through your preferences and what makes sense for the event. The person hosting the party gets considerably more voting power than the person who wandered over to the booth after their third margarita.
Can you DJ a party with several different generations?
Absolutely—and those are some of my favorite rooms. One of the skills I’ve developed over decades of DJing is moving between eras and genres without making the party feel like somebody is changing radio stations every three minutes. The goal isn’t to give each age group its designated fifteen-minute music block; it’s to find songs and sequences that give different people reasons to participate together.
Will Nick make announcements or emcee the event?
Yes. I’m also a professional emcee, so introductions, announcements, toasts, games, trivia, surprises and other hosted moments can be incorporated when appropriate. We’ll decide ahead of time how much—or how little—microphone presence makes sense for your particular party.
Do you provide the sound equipment?
Yes. Standard DJ engagements include the professional sound equipment needed for the agreed event scope, along with microphone options when required. If you need sound in multiple areas, outdoor coverage or more elaborate AV, tell me about the venue and we’ll build the appropriate setup.
Can I rent equipment or get a playlist without hiring a DJ?
Yes. For the right event, VSP offers a DIY-style alternative using professional sound equipment, and we can also help build the music experience when you don’t need a live DJ. If you’ve got somebody musically inclined who wants to handle playback but don’t want to trust the party to a Bluetooth speaker sitting on a folding chair, this can be a great middle ground.

Do you offer lighting or other party add-ons?
Yes. Depending on the event, options can include atmospheric lighting, uplighting and other enhancements. I prefer to recommend additions when they’ll actually improve the room rather than making you feel like you’re configuring a new car at the dealership.
Can VSP DJ outdoor or backyard parties?
Usually, yes. Outdoor events simply require a little more advance discussion around power, weather protection, sound coverage, setup location and local noise considerations. Tell me what you’re envisioning and I’ll help determine what the event needs.
Where does VSP provide private-party DJ services?
VSP serves Greater Boston, the South Shore and Southern New England, along with Hanover, Dartmouth College and the Upper Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont. For larger or particularly interesting events, travel beyond those core markets is also possible.
