First things first: “Sal” is short for Salvatoriello.

I’m Nick Salvatoriello, owner and lead DJ of Versatile Sound Productions. I started this business as a teenager in Hanover, New Hampshire in 1998, and I’ve spent most of my life since then learning how to do one thing really well:

Read and guide a room.

 

Sometimes that means finding exactly the right song to bring three generations onto a wedding dance floor. Sometimes it means confidently introducing a speaker in front of hundreds of people. Sometimes it means recognizing that the best thing an emcee can do is stop talking and let a moment happen.

Today, I work as a professional DJ, emcee, facilitator and event host serving weddings, corporate events, celebrations and milestone moments. I travel throughout Greater Boston, the South Shore and Southern New England, as well as Hanover, Dartmouth, the Upper Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont.

 

 

Different rooms. Different audiences.

Same objective: help people feel comfortable, connected and glad they showed up.

I’ve Always Loved Bringing People Together

I grew up in Hanover as the sixth of eleven children.

Yes. Eleven.

Growing up in a family that size teaches you a few things pretty quickly about personalities, group dynamics, sharing space, making yourself heard—and occasionally surrendering control of the remote.

 

 

More importantly, it gave me a lifelong appreciation for what happens when people gather.

Music became one of my first ways of shaping those moments. I started VSP at 15 and spent my teenage and college years DJing parties, dances, weddings, formals, reunions and community events. Along the way I performed in theater, sang in an a cappella group and worked in radio.

The formats were different, but I kept learning the same lesson:

Great entertainment isn’t really about the person holding the microphone. It’s about the people on the other side of it.

Then the Microphone Took Me Somewhere Else

After college, my professional career moved well beyond the DJ booth—but never very far from an audience.

I worked in fundraising, technology and relationship-building before moving to Boston and joining HubSpot in 2011 as one of the company’s earlier employees. Eventually I joined HubSpot Academy, where I helped build training and certification programs and traveled around the country teaching and speaking.

That led to a career spanning marketing, partnerships, consulting, training, podcasting, public speaking and live events.

Over the years, I’ve hosted webinars and podcasts, interviewed executives, moderated conversations, facilitated meetings and workshops, spoken from conference stages and helped organizations think more intentionally about the experiences they create for audiences.

Today, professional emceeing and event facilitation have become an important part of my work alongside Versatile Sound Productions.

And somewhere along the way I realized something:

All of that professional experience made me a much better DJ.

And decades of DJing made me a much better professional emcee.

More Than a DJ

Great music matters.

But so does everything that happens between the songs.

That’s where I believe my background makes VSP a little different.

I Prepare Like a Producer.

I want to understand more than your venue address and start time. Who’s coming? What matters most? What should the room feel like? Which moments need energy, which need space, and what could throw the timeline sideways?

The more I understand beforehand, the more effortless your event can feel when it actually happens.

I Read the Room Instead of Playing At It.

Your music preferences matter enormously. So does what your audience is telling me in real time.

A great DJ knows how to balance the plan with the people standing twenty feet away. A great emcee knows when a room needs energy, direction, humor—or absolutely nothing from him at all.

I Care About the Whole Experience.

Music, introductions, speeches, food service, photography, sound, lighting and timing aren’t separate events happening in the same room. They all affect one another.

Whether I’m DJing, emceeing or doing both, I’m constantly thinking beyond, “What happens next?”

I’m thinking:

“What does this room need next?”

That’s the job.

I’ve been fortunate to work with an enormous range of people over the years: couples and families celebrating once-in-a-lifetime milestones; Dartmouth alumni coming back together decades after graduation; companies hosting employees and customers; conference organizers managing complicated agendas; and audiences that simply needed somebody trustworthy holding the microphone.

Clients often tell me they appreciate the same things: preparation, professionalism, flexibility, an ability to understand their audience and the confidence to keep an event moving without making myself the center of it.

That’s exactly what I hope they notice.

Because when the DJ or emcee is doing the job well, you shouldn’t spend your event managing him.

Two Home Bases. Plenty of Road Between Them.

Versatile Sound Productions began in Hanover, New Hampshire, and more than two decades later we continue to serve Dartmouth College, Hanover and communities throughout the Upper Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont.

Today I’m based on Massachusetts’ South Shore, where VSP also serves Greater Boston and events throughout Southern New England.

And for the right event, I’m happy to travel farther.

Apparently I’ve never been particularly good at staying behind one booth.
